VMRC History

In May 1921 George B. Showalter from Rockingham County, Virginia left $1,000.00 in his will to be used for the care of older adults in the "establishment of a home for the aged" in Virginia. It was not until 30 years later in February 1951 that the Virginia Mennonite Home Corporation was formed. Its first Chairman was M.C. Showalter, the son of George. A building committee was appointed in April 1952.

The not-for-profit charter was issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia the same year, which officially and legally launched what is celebrating 50 years of growth and development throughout 2004. In 1953 excavation was begun, and in July 1954 the carefully planned and inspired vision of George and his cousin, HDH Showalter, became a reality as Virginia Mennonite Home opened its doors and was officially dedicated.

Over the past years, the Virginia Mennonite Home (now known as Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community - VMRC) has provided a heritage of Mennonite service to all. VMRC is a vibrant organization of more than 750 residents and 400 staff.

Park Village town homes, Park Place and Park Gables condominiums, Heritage Haven apartments, and Woodland cottages make up the retirement housing, while health care is provided at Crestwood assisted care residence and Oak Lea Nursing Home. The Wellness Center at VMRC serves the residents as well as the aged 50+ community.
