Senior wellness promoted during Active Aging Week

The Wellness Center at VMRC will offer free use of its facilities to persons 50 and older September 20-24. The week has been designated Active Aging Week by the International Council on Active Aging which hosts this annual health promotion to persons 50 and older.

Active Aging Week activities at VMRC include free use of the equipment and heated senior Olympic-size pool, facility tours and a waived application fee for all persons becoming members of the Wellness Center the week of Sept. 20.

Free Health presentations include:

Monday Sept. 20, 2 p.m.  “Feeling Good at Any Age; the Benefits of Massage” with Glenn Hakey, nationally certified Therapy Massage and Bodywork. Location: Wellness Center Activity Room

Tuesday Sept. 21, 7 p.m.   “Lifestyle Improvement through Physical Therapy” with Amy Marshall, physical therapist. Location: Wellness Center Activity Room

Wednesday Sept. 22, Noon “Smart Choices for Retirement” with Gannon Irons, financial advisor with Edward Jones Financial Services. (Lunch Provided. Reservation Required.) Location: Wellness Center Activity Room. Contact 540-574-3850 for lunch reservations.

       2 p.m. “Simple Steps to Detoxify Your Life,” Jeff Hersh, director of The Wellness Center.  Location: Wellness Center Activity Room

Thursday  Sept.23  2 p.m. “Balance Enhancement for Positive Lifestyle Change” with Kelly Pults, assistant director, the Wellness Center at VMRC. Location: Wellness Center Activity Room.

Designed with the over 50 crowd in mind, The Wellness Center at VMRC offers flexible memberships based on your fitness needs -- not a cookie-cutter one-size fits all program. Our wellness center staff will help you develop a personal exercise plan to assist in achieving your desired goals. And, our innovative wellness center houses on site rehab therapists who can give you back your freedom to enjoy your favorite activities.

Our Wellness Center is open to active adults in Harrisonburg and surrounding areas. With peer to peer interactions and group workouts, The Wellness Center at VMRC provides great opportunities to meet new people and visit with friends.

You’ll find an impressive array of equipment that will meet your fitness needs.  Wellness staff will help you develop a personal exercise plan to assist in achieving your desired goals.

  • Resistance training

We have a full line of resistance machines as well as free weights. Our staff can safely show you how to increase your range of motion, improve balance and increase mobility.

  • Group fitness classes

Join us for a variety of classes ranging from aerobics to low intensity chair-based programs. All classes are taught by certified instructors and are available for beginners or advanced students. Review a complete list of current classes.

  • Aquatics

Our Senior Olympic-size warm water pool includes lap lanes for swimming, aqua aerobics and space for individual exercise. The water temperature is kept approximately 89 degrees. We offer a variety of aquatic equipment to maximize your workout experience.

  • Spa

Relax in our 8-person hot tub. Heated at 101 degrees, the warm water and soothing jets will relax your tired muscles.

  • Aqua fitness

Our aquatics classes work on range of motion, stretching and cardiovascular endurance. We also offer classes to increase muscle tone, strength, endurance and flexibility while burning calories. Review a complete listing of classes.

  • Education Programs

Health education presentations and programs are an important aspect of healthy living. Want to learn more about controlling your cholesterol by eating properly? And is there a relationship between diet and diseases? Hear what our health educators have to say on these topics and many more!

Membership

We make exercise affordable with a variety of membership packages. Review our membership information and rates. Every membership includes a one-on-one personal fitness assessment to create a safe and effective approach to overall wellness. Our staff have earned certifications from the American Red Cross, the Aquatic Exercise Association, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise and the Arthritis Foundation.
