Managing Exercise During the Holidays

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! On the other hand, it could be one of the most stressful times of the year. With buying gifts, organizing get-togethers, work events, traveling, and all the to-do lists, it’s a lot to handle. Oftentimes our regular exercise routines get pushed to the side in place of all that needs to be done. One of the best things to battle stress and anxiety during the holidays IS exercise! How do you fit it all in and have balance? Keep reading for some helpful tips.

  • Plan Ahead: If you’re traveling during the holidays, planning ahead can make all the difference.

* Search for nearby walking, running or jogging paths.

* Check to see if your hotel has a gym you have access to.

* If you’re staying with family, see if they have any exercise equipment.

* Find a nearby gym. They will oftentimes have a day pass or a low cost for a day or two.

* Plan simple workouts. You don’t need equipment to give yourself a good bodyweight workout.

* Bring small portable equipment with you like resistance bands or TRX Suspension Trainer. Even small dumbbells travel well.

  • Get Prepared: If you’re not sure of your schedule, prepare for the little moments you might have available to squeeze a workout in.

* Prepare a quick 10-15 minute workout that you can do anytime, even between wrapping presents. An example might be 1 minute of each exercise:  lunges, squats, pushups, jumping jacks, planks, and sit-ups

* Look up quick workouts online. There’s so much content out there!

* Wear walking or jogging shoes while you do your holiday preparations. You may find a 20-minute window to get a quick walk or jog!

  • Use Every Opportunity:

* Try to fit in a workout, even a short one, first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Something is better than nothing! 

* Walk as much as possible, use the stairs, help with housework, rake leaves or shovel snow!

* Bare wall? Try holding a wall sit as long as possible. Stairs? Try calf raises or climbing stairs a couple of times.

If you absolutely cannot fit your workouts in, don’t worry. Jump right back into it when things get back to normal and use that holiday food as fuel! The most important thing is the time spent with the people you care about.
