2019 Year in Review

January 6, 2020
Categories: Our Community

As the new year begins, we look back on 2019 and some of our favorite highlights from the year:

Read a little more about some of the highlights from the video below:

January 2019 Hearts, Hands and Cider Event: In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day residents and staff celebrated his legacy of service by capturing the number of service hours residents and staff had given to agencies in the local community within the past year. For each person who volunteered, a paper hand was decorated and used to create a piece of living art that was developed throughout the day. In total, 7,888 hours were given to more than 50+ local organizations.

March 2019 Café Staff Celebration: The Resident Association Council (RAC) showed their appreciation to the VMRC Main Street Café staff with a celebration of thanks with cake, coffee and many kind words of recognition.

April 2019 Claude Hess Distinguished Service Award: Carolyn Nowlin and the late Pres Nowlin were awarded the Claude Hess Distinguished Service Award. The couple was nominated by five different VMRC employees from five different areas of campus. It’s evident that their impact on the VMRC community stretches across the entire campus. Read more about the recipients in this blog post.

April 2019 ‘Ripple’ Art Installation: ‘Ripple’ is installed in VMRC’s new Transitional Care Center. This commissioned piece created by Zac Nafziger illustrates the dynamic relationship between donors, VMRC and the larger community. The impact of each donor, whether large gift or small, creates its own ripples, interconnecting new ripples and a sense of movement in the flow of life. Donors to the Reinvesting in our Community Campaign (2016-2018) are laser engraved in the larger circles in the piece. Read more here.

May 2019 Penpal Reveal: VMRC residents and Skyline Middle School students from a Bridging English class spent several months communicating through letters as a way to allow students to practice their English reading and writing skills while allowing VMRC residents to learn more about the diverse population of Harrisonburg. The program culminated with a luncheon that brought the penpals together in person so they could meet and share a meal together.

August 2019 Nags Head Challenge: Wellness Center members tracked their mileage from VMRC to Nags Head – 325 miles – through walking, biking, running, swimming or steps!

August 2019 Filming for Virginia Farming TV Segment on VPM: The VMRC Farm at Willow Run and Main Street Café were featured on Virginia Farming TV, a show that airs on VPM. See the segment here.

October 2019 Inaugural All Campus Walk: More than 100 residents, wellness center members and staff participated in VMRC’s Inaugural All Campus Walk hosted by the Wellness Center during Active Aging Week.

October 2019 Woodland Park Fall Festival: The 2nd Annual Woodland Park Fall Festival hosted by Life Enrichment was an afternoon of fun for residents, staff and their families. The day featured a petting zoo, pumpkin painting, hot apple cider and plenty of games for the young and young at heart.

December 2019 Volunteer Holiday Reception: A volunteer reception was held in appreciation of the many VMRC volunteers who make so much of what we do possible.

“For us, volunteering gives us the opportunity to meet people from all areas of the VMRC campus and has broadened our perspective and understanding of the community we now call ‘home’.”
