After more than a year, the VMRC Wellness Center reopened its doors last week to vaccinated community members. It was a much anticipated day for both staff and returning members!
Melinda Noland, director of the Wellness Center said, “We’re so grateful to have made it to the point where we can safely expand reopening to our vaccinated community members. We’ve tried to maintain connection throughout the last year with emails, cards and messages but there’s nothing like that in-person connection.”
Members were asked to register ahead of last week’s reopening and so far, more than 200 members have rejoined.
One returning member is Larry Glick (pictured at left with Melinda Noland). Larry joined the Wellness Center in 2016 and prior to the pandemic, worked out regularly each week. Larry said, “I have always been athletic and played basketball regularly until knee pain forced me to stop. The Wellness Center pool caught my attention because I knew it was something I could do without pain.”
Initially drawn to join because of the pool and convenience to his home, Larry says the real differentiator is the staff. “From the start, I have been so impressed with the staff. Their knowledge, leadership and genuine positivity starts with Melinda and Jessica and trickles down through the rest of the team.”
With the Wellness Center closed during COVID, Larry took the opportunity to create a space at home to exercise. He incorporated weight training and cardio and said when working out, he would think about the staff and the encouragement they would be giving was he at the wellness center in person.
Larry returned for his first workout last week and said although it had been more than a year it didn’t feel like he had been away at all. “It’s really about the relationships and hearing from staff throughout all of this helped keep me motivated at home. Their focus is not just about physical health, it’s really a holistic approach to well-being and the staff combine competency, commitment and caring for members.”
