A Family Legacy of Care & Compassion
The story of the Wenger and Showalter families is one of enduring care and dedication that spans generations. It began with George B. Showalter, a visionary businessman of faith, who set aside a portion of his estate to establish the Virginia Mennonite Home, laying the foundation for what is now VMRC. His son, M.C. Showalter, carried forward this vision and was instrumental in bringing the program to life, serving as a key leader in its early development. This legacy has been lovingly preserved by his family, reflecting a deep commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for loved ones as they navigate the changes associated with aging.
Rhoda’s Journey to Peace of Mind
Rhoda Wenger, granddaughter of George B. Showalter and daughter of M.C. Showalter, is a current resident at VMRC. She knows firsthand the peace of mind that comes from having continuous access to compassionate care and resources. After facing falls and the uncertainty of being alone at home, Rhoda and her family decided that VMRC’s caring staff and secure environment were exactly what she needed.
Since moving in, Rhoda has thrived, enjoying activities such as bingo, Bible studies, and puzzles. Her son, Robert Wenger, holds VMRC in high regard, praising the exceptional care and the warm, community atmosphere that reassures families their loved ones are safe, well cared for, and happy.
The Compassion Fund’s Impact
Central to their story is the vital role played by VMRC’s Compassion Fund. When personal resources ran out due to no fault of her own, this fund ensured that Rhoda could continue to receive the care she needed. Compassion lies at the heart of our mission, enabling residents to live well within a supportive community, even during difficult times. For the Wenger family, the Compassion Fund has been a lifeline, turning what might have been a lonely or unsafe situation at home into a secure and enriching new chapter.
Honoring a Life of Care
At VMRC, the values that shaped the Showalter/Wenger family continue to guide our commitment to compassionate living. Residents are welcomed into a community that honors their stories, meets their needs, and walks with them through each stage of aging. Rhoda’s story shows how this legacy of care continues to make a meaningful difference by offering comfort, understanding, and a true sense of home.
Thank you to our generous donors for making the Compassion Fund possible. You can help sustain this legacy by supporting the fund or joining us at the upcoming Celebration of Lights. Your gift ensures residents like Rhoda continue to live safely, happily, and with dignity. In this spirit of gratitude, consider making a meaningful donation to continue this family legacy of care and compassion.
