How One Speech Therapist Helps Residents Rediscover What Matters Most

When Music Became the Breakthrough

Beth is one of our speech therapists at VMRC, and she will tell you that the most meaningful moments in her work are the ones she does not see coming. Early in her time here, Beth was working with a resident who had recently arrived from the hospital after a stroke and had lost much of her functional communication. Everyday interactions that once came naturally, like expressing how she was feeling or connecting with the people around her, had become difficult. But Beth kept showing up, building trust session by session. One day, with the resident's family in the room, the conversation turned to hymns the resident used to love. Beth leaned into the moment. Together, Beth, the resident, and her family began singing Amazing Grace, and the resident joined in, singing the chorus right alongside them.

For Beth, that is what speech therapy at VMRC is all about. It is personal. It is creative. And it honors the whole person.

Why Beth Chose VMRC

Beth is originally from the Shenandoah Valley, and her connection to VMRC started long before she joined the team. She had family members who were part of this community, and she saw up close the kind of care and warmth that defines life here. When the opportunity came to build her career at VMRC, the decision felt natural.

What drew Beth in was the chance to work with older adults across every level of care, from independent living to skilled nursing. That range means she gets to use her full skill set every day, working with residents on swallowing safety, cognition, voice, communication, and language. It also means she gets to build relationships with people through different stages of life, something Beth finds deeply rewarding.

The Impact Beyond the Therapy Room

Beth describes the impact of her work in terms of the everyday moments that matter most to residents. Whether it is helping someone return to their preferred diet after a hospital stay, manage their medications and schedules independently, or simply communicate more confidently with the people they love, the results reach far beyond a single session.

What makes this possible, Beth says, is the collaborative environment at VMRC. She works closely with occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, and CNAs, and that teamwork strengthens outcomes for every resident. Beth shares that she is constantly learning, not only about her own role, but about how every person on campus contributes to someone's progress and quality of life.

A Community That Invests in Its People

Beth is quick to point out that VMRC has played a major role in her own professional growth. Whether it is obtaining new certifications to provide better care or accessing new resources and tools, VMRC's leadership is always open to hearing ideas and finding ways to support them. That investment goes both ways. Beth brings her best to work every day because she feels genuinely supported in doing so.

What keeps Beth here, though, is the people. She describes a team that is genuinely supportive, a culture where collaboration is real, and a workplace where she wakes up excited to come in. She looks forward to seeing her team members, connecting with residents, and watching people make progress, day after day.

More Than Therapy

Beth's story is a window into what makes speech therapy at VMRC different. It is about more than restoring communication or improving safety. It is about helping adults hold onto the moments that define them, a favorite hymn, a conversation with a grandchild, the confidence to manage daily life on their own terms. We are proud to have clinicians like Beth on our team, and we are proud to offer this kind of care.
