A Heart for Healing

For Iris, nursing is rooted in compassion, connection, and a commitment to quality care. Each day at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, she finds purpose in supporting patients through skilled nursing and assisted care. Watching individuals grow stronger, regain confidence, and feel more at ease in their care continues to inspire her work as a nurse.

From Early Experience to a Nursing Career

Iris began her journey at VMRC while still in high school, working in dining services and becoming part of the community. That early experience gave her insight into the collaborative and caring environment that defines life and work at VMRC.

As she entered nursing school, Iris completed her preceptorship at VMRC, gaining hands-on experience in a supportive healthcare setting. With the help of a scholarship, she was able to continue her education and prepare for a career in nursing. After passing her NCLEX, she transitioned seamlessly into her role as a nurse, already grounded in VMRC’s approach to resident-centered care.

Learning Through Support and Mentorship

During clinical rotations in other healthcare settings, Iris experienced fast-paced environments where learning opportunities were limited. At VMRC, she found a different approach. Experienced nurses took time to provide mentorship, encouragement, and one-on-one guidance. This supportive approach played a key role in building her skills and confidence as a caregiver.

A Community That Supports Care

Community is at the heart of life at VMRC. From shared celebrations to everyday moments, relationships are built through connection and care. Within that environment, Iris has found genuine camaraderie with her coworkers, coming to see them not just as colleagues but as friends.

This sense of connection carries into Iris’s patient care. She strives to bring comfort and reassurance to those facing difficult moments, knowing that kindness and presence can make a meaningful difference.
