At VMRC, our commitment to holistic care shapes everything we do. That commitment calls us to look for tools that do more than entertain. We look for resources that enrich the whole person.
The Tovertafel, whose name translates to “magic table,” has become one of those resources. By projecting interactive light onto a tabletop surface, it invites residents to move, respond, and participate in ways that feel natural and engaging.
Engagement That Makes a Difference
What makes this technology meaningful is how widely it serves our community. Residents who require a higher level of care are able to participate in ways that feel accessible and enjoyable. The activities encourage hand and eye coordination, friendly competition, and shared laughter.
It has become especially helpful during evening and night shifts, when residents may experience restlessness or need additional support transitioning between activities. The interactive surface offers a positive, engaging focus that encourages participation and calm. On weekends, when families visit more frequently, it becomes a natural gathering place, offering something meaningful to do side by side.
A Gift That Multiplies Joy
The introduction of the Tovertafel to VMRC was made possible through the generosity of supporters, including Hugh Westfall, who believed in its potential to enrich daily life. After seeing its success and impact, additional units were funded through proceeds from a community golf tournament. What began as one resource has grown to several, expanding access across our campus.
This kind of generosity reflects the heart of our community. Resources like this reach far beyond a single program. It strengthens the experience of residents, caregivers, team members, and families who share in life at VMRC each day.
