Creating Moments that Matter: Montessori Approaches at VMRC
By Natalie Trout, Madison Community Scholar Project
At VMRC, we are dedicated to creating opportunities that bring joy and offer connection and purpose to residents every day. Our programs are guided by Montessori principles, which include purposeful and engaging activities that provide meaning to the community, enhance quality of life and spark cheerful memories.
Residents created beautiful bouquets with creativity and care.
Earlier this fall, residents took part in a flower arrangement activity. This event took place during National Assisted Living Week. The bouquets residents made were displayed as centerpieces at a luau luncheon for everyone in assisted living. This activity enabled residents to contribute to their community through time, effort and creativity. Residents also experienced a sense of accomplishment by seeing their arrangements flourish at the center of conversation, laughter and feasting. It fueled rewarding moments.
Residents enjoyed great food and beautiful centerpieces during our luau.
At VMRC, we have had wonderful results in facilitating activities that encompass tradition, nature and animals. For instance, staff members hosted a dog show accessible to all residents that focused on sensory stimulation, bringing laughter and comfort to those in attendance. In addition, a trip to Showalter’s Orchard offered residents the chance to reconnect with nature while reminiscing about past autumn traditions. Residents were able to shop in the store on the orchard property and enjoy a sense of independence and personal choice. This meaningful outing was successful in creating new memories at the start of the autumn season for all in attendance. One evening, we gathered for s’mores on campus, turning a simple treat into a meaningful experience. Being surrounded by familiar smells, tastes and laughter created a sense of warmth and a strong community feel among all residents.
Our annual dog show delighted all who attended.
Each of these programs does so much more than entertain; they tap into the heart of Montessori care. These experiences grant residents the chance to recall vivid memories, connect with the environment and participate in an active community. Purposeful engagement provides room for residents to show their individuality and find meaning through their activities. Moments of joy and connection are just as important as meeting residents’ physical needs.
At VMRC, we share these experiences and together feel emotions such as pride in a flower arrangement, the smile created by a dog's fluffy embrace and the familiar taste of a delicious s’more. These are the moments that demonstrate why Montessori care matters to us. Through purposeful engagement, we create moments that matter to residents.
