The New Possibilities of Everyday Living
When Abe and Ruth Rittenhouse moved to VMRC, they discovered something they hadn’t expected: their world grew larger, not smaller. “When I came to VMRC, I gained more than I gave up,” Abe reflects. That simple line captures what so many residents experience: a renewed sense of connection, curiosity, and purpose that makes life richer every day.
Their story together began decades ago with a bit of luck and a friendly setup. “He didn’t have any idea who I was,” Ruth laughs, “but I had seen his picture in the high school yearbook.” That first blind date on a hayride turned into a lifetime partnership filled with work, faith, and service.”
Continuing Passions
Abe’s professional journey has always balanced creativity and service. For eight years, he worked in the recording studio owned by the Mennonite Board of Missions, helping produce radio programming for their church denomination. He later launched Rittenhouse Landscaping, a contract landscaping business that grew to include several employees. His love of nurturing both people and places has stayed with him ever since.
It’s no surprise that Abe brought that same passion to VMRC. Shortly after moving in, he became involved with the newly formed Landscape Beautification Club, a resident-led group focused on enhancing VMRC’s outdoor spaces. As the club’s chair, Abe helps coordinate plantings, garden projects, and ideas that make the campus flourish. “It continues to be a real interest of mine,” he says. “There’s real satisfaction in seeing what a little effort and teamwork can do.”
Ruth’s career was always rooted in care. A nurse for much of her life, she worked in pediatrics, geriatrics, and for thirty years in the operating room. In retirement, she continues to give her time and talents to her church and community. At Lindale Mennonite Church, Ruth participates in the ladies’ sewing group that assembles comforters for people in need. “We bring the tops home and finish them up,” she explains. “Some of the ladies come and join us downstairs to knot the comforters.” This is yet another way she stays connected to her community and gives back.
Life That Keeps Expanding
Since moving to VMRC, Abe and Ruth say their world has continued to open in new directions through friendships, shared interests, and experiences they never expected. “We see other people, we’re doing different things, and we enjoy it,” Ruth says. She recently attended a talk by the local mayor, something she admits she probably wouldn’t have done before. “I’ve not met anybody that said they moved in too soon,” she adds. “But I’ve met a number of people who said, ‘I wish I had come sooner.’”
For Abe and Ruth, VMRC isn’t just where they live. It’s where their life together keeps unfolding in new and meaningful ways. Every day at VMRC offers something new for its residents.
