Connection and Celebration at VMRC

At VMRC, it’s not just about providing care—it’s about creating connection. For Lizzie Smith, Marketing Assistant, the culture and camaraderie here have kept her coming back for nearly a decade. “I have wanted to be at VMRC. It’s not just a place to work,” she says. “I love the culture here. I love the people here—not just the residents but the staff. It’s my home away from home.” Lizzie began her journey as a CNA, later worked at the front desk, and eventually transitioned into marketing. Her experience across campus helps her see just how unique the community truly is.

One of the ways VMRC builds this strong sense of connection is through campus-wide events like the annual parade and spring festival. “VMRC is very welcoming to everyone,” Lizzie explains. “The events we have—they’re not just for residents. They’re for staff involvement too. It’s enriching for everyone.” Departments team up to create floats, join in the friendly competition and most importantly, bring joy to the residents. These celebrations give staff a chance to participate in something bigger than their day-to-day responsibilities—bringing smiles and creating memories for all..

Joanie James, Life Enrichment Manager at Woodland Park, sees firsthand how these events bring the VMRC mission to life. “This is our annual spring festival and egg hunt, which started three years ago,” she says. “It’s a great feeling to see the community come out—staff, residents, families, volunteers. We even have students helping escort residents and serve treats. It’s very humbling.” For Joanie, it’s not just about putting on an event—it’s about building relationships. “I know almost all the residents by name. I know their families. It makes the work more meaningful. It makes it not feel like work.”

Whether it’s a float in the parade or a conversation during the festival, these moments remind staff why they love being part of VMRC. “When it’s more than just sitting at a computer and pushing a pen—when it’s about knowing people across campus and being part of a community—it changes everything,” Lizzie says. “I feel very valued here, and I know I’m not the only one who feels that way.” At VMRC, events aren’t just activities—they’re reflections of a culture built on belonging, purpose and joy for everyone who calls this campus home.
