Opening Minds Through Art

By Natalie Trout, Madison Community Scholar Project

At VMRC, Opening Minds Through Art (OMA) is more than just a creative program. For us, it’s a bridge between older and younger adults. Through a partnership with James Madison University, students taking “Health Aspects of Gerontology” visit our campus weekly to work on OMA projects with residents. This partnership fosters artistic expression and intergenerational connection. People of different ages coming together to create something new is a reflection of what it means to live in a Montessori lifestyle community — a community filled with growth and learning.

The simple act of creating art together helps build trust and communication. Residents often gain confidence and joy from expressing themselves. Students develop greater empathy and respect for older adults while gaining experience in the field of gerontology.

With the Montessori approach, learning is not limited by age but enriched by it. Both residents and students bring valuable perspectives and ideas to the table where they make art. OMA gives residents the space to express themselves creatively, and gives students the chance to provide companionship and encouragement. This partnership allows both generations to learn from one another. Residents share wisdom and experiences. Students offer new energy and curiosity.

In OMA sessions, students create art in a way that challenges residents and provides a sense of accomplishment. When the projects are complete, each piece is framed and displayed for viewing. During the exhibit, residents and students gather to celebrate their creations and reflect on their time together. The event highlights the joy of collaboration and the value of intergenerational connection. These core ideas of the Montessori approach remind us that learning and creativity continue at every age.

Montessori principles used alongside OMA promote creativity, connection, dignity, and the idea that learning never stops. We at VMRC are happy to see beauty and collaboration shine through artmaking and our Montessori way of living.
